A Finished Artist Studio Quilt Top!

Ladies in the Cocorico Bee---look what we made together!!  I am so excited to share this quilt top today.  I lot of collective hours plus gobs of creativity went into this top.  I chose the theme "Artist Studio" for my month in the Cocorico Bee.  I asked that the blocks be any size and gave no other requirement.  Everyone outdid themselves. I love each and every block in the quilt--all for different reasons. And I think everyone knows me well because they used fabrics that reflect my taste and that resulted in a very cohesive group of blocks.

I spent many hours this weekend piecing the quilt top.  Because the blocks were different sizes, I added bits of sashing here and there using Crosshatch in Grey from the Architextures line.  I also used a bit of pen nib fabric sent by one of the bee members.  Into the sashing, I added pieced bits for added interest.  I made the pencil above--I don't think it would be possible to find a better eraser fabric than the Kissing Booth Cotton Candy Grunge by BasicGrey. I was so excited to use it here. I was also excited to use a bit of the First of Infinity yellow text print for the pencil itself.  Fun!

A number of the blocks had painting themes so I made a couple of brushes. I like how the text works as bristles here....so much so that I used it in the block below as well (if it ain't broke, don't fix it!).

And then I made this brush--I think that the style is actually a sashing brush for window painting but I wanted a brush with a different look so I settled on this design. Again, I like the way the Chicopee Ladder Dot in Black works for bristles. I have so much fun selecting fabrics for things like this.

Now I just need to decide how to tackle the quilting for this, piece the backing and get started on finishing it.  I have already selected the binding. I am going to use Architectures Text on Navy.

Thank you again to all my friends who made blocks for my quilt-I'm going to cherish this one.  I was working on it this weekend at the Boston Modern Quilt Guild retreat and your work received many compliments.

  2. It's fabulous and I love how you added the paint bruch & the pencil to the border. I've seen a lot of blocks from that bee, but I think this may be the first completed quilt I've seen with them. Wonderful job in every way

  9. Fantastic, Amy! It looks so great. I love the bits you've added, the paintbrushes and pencil in the sashing are so wonderful. I might have to borrow the idea of piecing little things into sashing when I put mine together. Just waiting on a few more blocks and then I can wait to get my puzzle together too. I loved your theme and there are a lot of my favourite Cocorico blocks in there. The crosshatch you've used is so perfect too. Just like pencil drawing. Looking forward to seeing how you quilt it :)

  12. Great job girlie....fantastic layout and the brushes in the border...genius!;)

I totally think you need to handquilt this....use a nice thick perle cotton and stitch around each object and then highlight something in each one like do the stem and some lines on the feathers and maybe the labels on the tubes of paint....something like that. Oh..and the inside edge of each block and of course the border!:)

  23. It is so awesome! I love it. You find just the right fabrics. Some day you'll have to tell us how you store your fabrics so that you can find them when you need them for stuff like this. :-)
